Expense and employee spend management software, acquired by Medius in 2023
Acquired by Swedish software group Medius in July 2023; Medius has since rebranded the product as Medius Expense.
Expensya is an expense-management software company founded in Tunisia in 2014 by Karim Jouini and Jihed Othmani, two former Microsoft engineers. It started with automated expense reports, in which employees photograph receipts and AI extracts the data, and grew into broader employee spend management with web and mobile apps, payment cards and integrations with ERPs such as SAP, Oracle and Microsoft Dynamics. The company sold mainly to European customers, with France as its main market, while most engineering stayed in Tunis; its legal base was in Paris. In April 2021 it announced a $20 million Series B with MAIF Avenir, Silicon Badia, ISAI and Seventure Partners, and TechCabal put its total funding at $25.6 million. Swedish accounts-payable automation group Medius announced its intent to acquire Expensya on 7 June 2023 and completed the deal on 25 July 2023. The price was not disclosed; press reports put it above $100 million. At closing, Expensya reported more than 6,000 client companies and about 200 employees. The founders left in January 2025, when Medius was rebranding the product as Medius Expense, and went on to start Thunder Code.
