How to Receive Money in Tunisia from Abroad: 2026 Guide

Bank account, cash pickup at an agent or post office, or a mobile wallet: what recipients in Tunisia need to collect money sent from abroad, and how to stay safe.

How to Receive Money in Tunisia from Abroad: 2026 Guide

Key takeaways

  • Money sent from abroad can be credited to a Tunisian bank account, collected in cash at an agent, bank or post office, or, with Taptap Send, paid into the Kashy wallet.
  • To collect cash you need a valid ID, the transfer reference (such as Western Union's MTCN) and a name that matches the transfer exactly.
  • Payouts are in Tunisian dinars, at the provider's own rate; the BCT publishes the previous day's average interbank rate as a benchmark.
  • Never share your reference number with anyone but the counter agent, and be wary of prize, romance or advance-fee stories.

When a relative or client abroad sends you money, how you collect it depends on the service they choose: a credit to a Tunisian bank account, cash at an agent or post office, or, with a few providers, a mobile wallet. This guide explains how to receive money in Tunisia, what to bring to the counter, which exchange rate applies and how to avoid the scams that target recipients. Senders can compare current offers in our money transfer comparator.

How can I receive money from abroad in Tunisia?

There are three main routes, depending on the provider the sender picks, so agree on the method before the money is sent.

  • Credit to a bank account, in dinars.
  • Cash pickup at an agent, a bank branch or a post office.
  • A mobile wallet, offered by a small number of providers.

Transfer to a Tunisian bank account

Most international operators can pay into a Tunisian account. The sender needs your full name as it appears at the bank, the bank's name and your account number. Remitly lists about 30 Tunisian institutions for bank deposit, including Banque Zitouna, Banque de l'Habitat, Amen Bank, Attijari Bank, BIAT and La Poste Tunisienne; Ria's German site names banks such as Amen Bank, UIB, BNA and Banque Tuniso-Libyenne. Western Union and MoneyGram also offer bank deposit from some sending countries, and Paysend pays dinars to Tunisian bank accounts or Mastercard cards. A transfer ordered at a traditional bank branch abroad is possible too, but can be costly: in the World Bank's August 2025 survey, a €140 transfer from a Société Générale branch in France cost 28.24% in total.

A mobile wallet

Direct payout to a Tunisian wallet is still rare. Taptap Send can credit Kashy, the wallet launched in March 2026 by Tunisie Telecom with the payment institution Viamobile; in most cases the recipient has nothing to do, as the money lands in the app, and Kashy agents are listed on kashy.tn. None of the provider pages we checked offered direct payout to La Poste's D17 or e-Dinar. Our guide to mobile payments in Tunisia covers the wider wallet market.

Where can I collect cash? Western Union, MoneyGram and other networks

Each provider has its own payout partners, and they change; the surest way to find an authorised point is the provider's locator or app. As of October 2026:

  • Western Union pickup in Tunisia happens at participating Western Union agent locations, found with its "find a location" tool. Funds are usually available within minutes, subject to opening hours.
  • MoneyGram Tunisia: in 2020, La Poste Tunisienne and MoneyGram signed an agreement allowing recipients to collect transfers at any of more than 1,050 post offices, Managers reported. MoneyGram's locator now shows over 2,200 locations in Tunisia.
  • WorldRemit pays cash at Swared and Banque de l'Habitat branches. At Banque de l'Habitat, the recipient must also quote "Moneytrans".
  • Taptap Send pays cash at Wafacash and Zitouna Payment agents; it says Wafacash agents are open seven days a week, 8am to 8pm.
  • Ria says it has more than 390 partner payout locations, with partners including Wafacash, Wifak Bank, BNA and BTK.

What do I need to collect a Western Union or MoneyGram transfer in Tunisia?

The basics are the same everywhere: a valid ID, the transfer reference and a name that matches exactly.

  • Western Union: a valid ID and the tracking number (MTCN). Its Tunisian page says the recipient must be over 13 and that the "test question" option is not available for payments in Tunisia. The principal is capped at USD 10,000, or the local equivalent, per transaction.
  • MoneyGram: the reference number from the sender's receipt or confirmation email and a valid photo ID (passport, national ID or residence permit). Your name on the transfer must exactly match your ID, and some agents ask you to fill in a short receive form.
  • WorldRemit: a Tunisian passport, national ID card or driving licence, plus the 10-digit reference sent by SMS and email.
  • Taptap Send: your full name, a valid government-issued ID and the pickup code.

Senders should type the name exactly as written on the recipient's CIN or passport. A spelling mismatch is the most common reason a payout is refused, and changing a transfer after it is sent is difficult.

In which currency is the money paid, and at what rate?

In Tunisia, transfers are paid out in Tunisian dinars: Taptap Send, Remitly, Ria and Paysend all describe payout in TND.

The dinar's value is set on the Tunisian interbank foreign exchange market. Every day, the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT) publishes the previous day's average interbank rates for information. In a 2022 clarification reported by Kapitalis, the BCT stressed that this is not "the BCT's rate" but the average of trades between banks.

Transfer companies apply their own rate, usually with a margin. In the World Bank's survey of transfers from France (data collected in August 2025), margins ranged from slightly better than the benchmark (-0.46% at Attijariwafa Bank online) to 7.31% for Western Union cash handed over at an agent. Our guide to the cheapest ways to send money to Tunisia explains how to compare them.

Can I keep the money in foreign currency or convertible dinars?

That depends on where you live.

  • Tunisians living abroad (TRE). Since 2020, they can open foreign-currency accounts directly at Tunisian banks without a BCT exemption, the finance minister announced at the time, according to Le360. Most banks market TRE packages with foreign-currency or convertible-dinar accounts, and La Poste offers a convertible-dinar savings account opened with a copy of a residence card. Transfer and fee rules differ by bank, so check the terms.
  • Residents in Tunisia can, under the 2026 Finance Law, open foreign-currency or convertible-dinar accounts with authorised banks without prior BCT approval. The funding sources listed in press reports are transfers from other such accounts, interest and the annual travel allowance. We could not confirm whether family remittances from abroad can be credited to these accounts in foreign currency; ask your bank. Our article on the foreign exchange code reform follows the changes.

How long does it take, and does the recipient pay fees?

Timing. Cash pickup is usually the fastest: Western Union, WorldRemit and Taptap Send all speak of minutes, and MoneyGram said its post office payouts take minutes. Bank credits vary: Taptap Send says minutes, but up to two working days to appear on the account; Ria says transfers funded from a bank account take three to five business days; Attijariwafa Bank's online service from France arrived the next day in the World Bank survey.

Fees. None of the Western Union, MoneyGram, WorldRemit or Taptap Send pages we checked mentions a fee for the person collecting cash: the sender pays the fee and the exchange margin. For a bank credit, your Tunisian bank may charge a commission on incoming transfers. Several banks' TRE offers advertise waived fees on incoming transfers, sometimes only for the first year, so check your bank's tariff.

How can I avoid scams when receiving money?

  • Keep the reference number to yourself. MoneyGram advises receivers not to share it with anyone they don't know well. Give it only to the counter agent.
  • Collect only at authorised points: an agent listed in the provider's app or locator, a bank branch or a post office. Never hand your code to an intermediary who offers to collect for you.
  • Watch for classic stories. Western Union's fraud guide lists romance scams (someone met online who needs money urgently), lottery or prize scams (you must pay "fees" to receive winnings), advance-fee loans, fake job offers and overpayment tricks. A real prize never requires you to pay first.
  • Don't send money back to someone you have never met, even after receiving a transfer from them.
  • Avoid informal exchange. Street dealers may offer more dinars per euro, but unauthorised foreign exchange operations are offences in Tunisia, and you have no recourse if something goes wrong.

Once a transfer is completed, a reversal may not be possible, so contact the provider quickly if something looks wrong. For volumes and trends, see our article on diaspora remittances, and use the comparator to check current options before each transfer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I receive money from abroad in Tunisia?

Ask the sender which service they use. Depending on the provider, the money can be credited to your Tunisian bank account, collected in cash at an agent, bank branch or post office, or, with Taptap Send, paid into the Kashy mobile wallet. In every case it is paid in dinars.

What do I need to collect a Western Union transfer in Tunisia?

A valid ID and the money transfer control number (MTCN) given by the sender. Western Union says the recipient must be over 13 and that the test question option is not available in Tunisia. The name on your ID must match the name the sender entered.

Can I collect a MoneyGram transfer at the post office in Tunisia?

Yes. Under a 2020 agreement, MoneyGram transfers can be collected at La Poste Tunisienne's offices, more than 1,050 at the time. Bring the reference number and a valid photo ID such as your national ID card or passport.

Can I receive euros instead of dinars in Tunisia?

Transfers to Tunisia are paid out in dinars. Tunisians living abroad can hold foreign-currency or convertible-dinar accounts at Tunisian banks, and since 2026 residents can open such accounts without prior BCT approval, but how they can be funded is regulated, so ask your bank.

Does the recipient pay a fee to collect money in Tunisia?

The Western Union, MoneyGram, WorldRemit and Taptap Send pages we checked mention no fee for the person collecting cash; the sender pays the fee and the exchange margin. For credits to a bank account, check your bank's tariff for incoming transfers.
